Garden of Eden

One weekend we decided to head up to the South East coast of New South Wales to a town called Eden. The town has an interesting history (nothing to do with Adam and Eve) as a Whaling town. Whales go past the town of Eden between July and October every year as part of their migration south for food in Antarctica. This seemed like a perfect place for a weekend escape to finally see some whales and tick that off the bucket list (after our failed attempt in New Zealand).

Side note: the weekend we went away was Grand Final Long weekend in October. This is just another reason why Victoria is the best state in Australia. They have long weekends for sports. Although I am not much of a sports fan, I will take any long weekend I can!

We drove up to Eden from Melbourne on the Friday. It took us almost 6 hours. We set up our tent at the campsite and went straight to a viewing point (Rotary Park) on the coast to see if we could catch a glimpse of a whale. We did! You didn’t even need binoculars to see their tales thrashing around in the water.

The next day we woke to a broken tent! At some stage throughout the night one of the poles snapped. We decided to leave it for the day as we had to get to our Whale Watching cruise with Cat Balou. They took us out for a 3.5 hour boat trip and we saw about 4-5 pods of 3-4 humpback whales. That’s over 12 whales in total. They were mostly families with baby calves. Super cute!

On the way back, Cat Balou took us to a secret spot and we saw hundreds of bottle nose dolphins. They were chasing after the boat and putting on a real show for everyone. Just don’t lean over the boat too far to watch them as they spurt water and air out of their blow holes. I was hanging over and some got in my mouth. I think I kissed a dolphin.
Anyway, Phil got heaps of photos of the day, including some of me not looking so flash (I felt ill when the boat wasn’t moving, but some crackers and cheese made me feel better – as it always does).

We decided to head home early due to the bloody broken tent pole – we tried fixing it with tape but it just wasn’t working. But that didn’t stop us from going for a quick dip at the beach (was cold) and enjoying the long drive home after an epic day seeing epic creatures.

Stayed: In a broken tent at South Coast Holiday Park
Ate: Taste of Eden (they did the most amazing King Zulu Cake)
Coffeed: Sprout Eden (Health food store and café)
Adventured: Whale Watched with Cat Balou Cruises (http://www.catbalou.com.au/)

Until next adventure,
Sxx
